Dagmar Berghoff: Congratulations from the Federal President

The former "Tagesschau" spokeswoman Dagmar Berghoff receives greetings from the top for her 80th birthday on January 25: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (67) honors the moderator in an official statement. "Many people will think of you today on your day of honor and send you good wishes. I am happy to join this large group," the text of the Federal President begins.

In 1976, Berghoff was the first woman to read the news of ARD's "Tagesschau" - and did the job for a full 23 years. "You were - a sensation at the time - the first 'Tagesschau' spokeswoman. You brought the news into our living room at home more than 10,000 times with the greeting 'Good evening, ladies and gentlemen'," remembers Steinmeier. "For all your fame and popularity, you've always stayed true to yourself."

The head of state also draws attention to the spokeswoman's charity work: "As a long-time patron of the children's charity Terre des Hommes, you have helped draw attention to children in need. All children have the right to education, food and health and to their needs are taken into account. Together with many voluntary supporters, you are a role model for justice and lived humanity."
