Customs: Turning away from classic Christmas carols - the main thing is singing

According to an expert, traditional Christmas carols are becoming less important - but singing in general is not going out of style. "Pop songs displace the classical songs," said the President of the Mannheim Music Academy, Rudolf Meister, the German Press Agency. At Christmas, for example, radio listeners are treated to songs like "Driving Home for Christmas" (Chris Rea) and "Last Christmas" by Wham! flooded.

Master said singing is still very popular. "Whether in the shower, in the car or in the numerous amateur choirs - people sing what they hear every day, what they know by heart because they have it in their ears," explained the pianist, adding: "These are no longer the first Line songs like "A rose has sprung" or "Your little children are coming" with their religious background."

According to the head of the university, Meister, singing is the most fundamental musical experience and is innate in all people; and the urge to do so was not broken in any society - only the content and types of singing changed. As a child, he sang Christmas carols under the Christmas tree and accompanied them on the piano. "Today we don't even have a Christmas tree."

According to the piano professor, it is not decisive for social development what is sung; it's more about singing.
