A spout that doesn't look particularly well maintained, surrounded by a high fence. Garbage cans are around. In it a group of dogs, barking loudly: Labradors, in various shades from blond to brown. The animals appear excited but not aggressive. Nevertheless, a woman standing in the middle of the pack starts to roar and hit the dogs with an iron bar. Due to the mediocre quality of the video taken by a local resident from a distance, it is (fortunately) impossible to tell whether an animal hits it directly. Behavior that at least raises questions.
A neighbor of the dog breeding company in Berlin-Reinickendorf recorded the frightening scene with his cell phone. As the unknown reported to the animal rights organization Peta, there had been similar situations there before, and up to 35 dogs were sometimes housed in the run. In order to draw attention to the situation, the residents informed the animal rights activists.
Peta shared the video online, where it quickly sparked shocked reactions. It can be seen via this link, but it's sure to upset animal lovers. Meanwhile, the owner of the kennel also commented on the footage (who is not the woman in the video). "I reject all allegations," she told the "B.Z." "A lot of it can actually be proven to be untrue." The employee shown only hit the air with the pole to separate a dispute between two dogs. Why she had such a massive metal rod with her at all remains an open question.
In any case, Peta does not believe this explanation. Speaker Jana Hoger says: "The abuse shown in the video is frightening. We keep getting similar reports about breeding farms where dogs are neglected and tortured."
Labradors in particular are popular family dogs, for which breeders can charge high prices. This ensures that not all breeding operations put the welfare of the animals before the finances. Jana Hoger demands that in the case of Berlin-Reinickendorf the veterinary office must intervene.
The authorities have actually already reacted. Like the "B.Z." reported that the responsible city councilor confirmed that an inspection had taken place. As this is an ongoing process, no results have yet been announced.
