Chill-out zone: reading, lounging, laughing: why a beanbag is so much fun for children

That's the thing with sitting. Nature hasn't really optimized humans for crouching on a piece of furniture with their behind. For very practical reasons, chairs are still one of the most used pieces of furniture. But sitting is not really comfortable in the long run – neither when driving, nor in the office and certainly not at school. These or similar thoughts may have gone through the minds of the inventors of the beanbag. The chill pillows filled with thousands of small styrofoam balls have been very popular in children's rooms for several years.

Are you looking for a beanbag for children? In the following we present five models for relaxing, reading, cuddling and romping around.

Despite the uncharming name, the Fatboy is considered the Ferrari of beanbags. In addition to the versions for adults, the Dutch manufacturer has also thought of the little ones. The junior model is 100 centimeters wide and 130 centimeters high and is available in bright and muted colours. Like its big brother, there are millions of polystyrene beads in Fatboy Junior's belly. The nylon outer shell is washable. With its weight of around three kilograms, it is easy enough to heave the beanbag into the right corner of the room, even for smaller children. Practical: If necessary, polystyrene beads can be refilled via a zipper.

The all-over print for football and skater fans is the highlight of the Knorrtoys beanbag from toy specialist myToys. Here, too, small Styrofoam balls ensure that children from the age of three can lounge on the pillow as they please. The "Junior" model, which in contrast to the Fatboy looks more like an armchair than a cushion, has a diameter of about 75 centimeters. The manufacturer specifies the height (of the backrest) as 100 centimetres. Spills are no problem with this beanbag. The outer cover can be zipped off and cleaned in the washing machine.

As a cuddly toy, beanbag and play furniture, the Happy Animals from Smoothy should provide double and triple fun in children's and teenagers' rooms. The legendary dragon monster Nessi, a whale and an elephant would like to move in with their new friends. Before getting to know each other for the first time, however, a little patience is required. It can take a few days for the visco memory foam flakes inside the animal beanbags to unfold completely. Unless you gently pat and shake the new pet out of its sleep. The Smoothy "Animal Series" beanbag is delivered vacuum-packed. The cuddly cushions were covered with soft linen-cotton. Depending on the model, they are between 125 and 140 centimeters long and 55 to 100 centimeters wide.

The Lazy Bag Original XL Junior lives up to its name. In the 160 centimeters long and 125 centimeters wide cushion there is enough space for lounging. According to the manufacturer, the Lazy Bag doesn't itch when it's used as a slouch bag on the terrace or in the garden. The outer shell is made of waterproof and fade-resistant nylon and is removable and washable. The inner bag has space for 250 liters of Styrofoam balls, which according to the manufacturer come from Germany. The colors in which you can snuggle up in the children's room are also suitable for children. There are nine bright designs to choose from, including orange, violet and a bright green.

A small family business from the Upper Black Forest sends its XXL beanbag for children to this mini comparison. Joyfill promises cozy seating furniture "Made in Germany". A total of 240 liters of non-toxic Styrofoam balls fit into the beanbags covered with ÖKO-TEX cotton, which weigh around 3.5 kilograms and take up 100 by 70 centimeters of space. When it comes to colors and designs, there are hardly any wishes left unfulfilled. With Joyfill, too, the beanbag and outer shell can be separated from each other with a zip. The cover is washable and the ticking can be filled with more styrofoam balls if necessary.
