Change of throne in Denmark: All in white: Why Queen Mary chose this dress for the proclamation

On Sunday the Danes celebrated their royal family. Surprising to many, Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication at the end of 2023 after 52 years on the throne. She handed the office over to her son, King Frederik X. His wife Mary is now queen - and she chose a very special outfit for the proclamation.

All in white, the native Australian beamed from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. The designer of her robe with an integrated scarf is the Dane Soeren Le Schmidt. So Mary had chosen a local fashion designer for this special day. He was “extremely grateful” for that, wrote Le Schmidt on Instagram. In his story, the 35-year-old shared numerous impressions of the festival in his home country. Mary has been a fan of the Dane for a long time. It was not the first time that she trusted Le Schmidt and chose one of his creations for a special occasion.

Already at the coronation of King Charles III. in May 2023 she wore a dress by the designer. Mary appeared in London all in purple. The fact that she chose white as the color for the proclamation is no coincidence.

In addition to red, white is also one of the colors of the Danish flag. In addition, the color white symbolizes a new beginning in psychology - and is therefore extremely appropriate for the celebration in Denmark when Mary became queen and her husband became king.

The couple could also strive for a new beginning privately. Recently, Danish tabloids had increasingly reported on Frederik's alleged affair. The court did not want to comment on the rumors. It was even more important for the family and the country that the new royal couple presented themselves as a unit at the weekend. With a kiss on the palace balcony, Mary and Frederik only emphasized their intentions even more.
