British Royal Family: "Frightening": Why Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson was afraid of Prince Philip

Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson was a red rag for Prince Philip for years. The reason was her indiscretions, more specifically paparazzi photos that showed the then Duchess topless sunbathing in 1992. But that's not all: one of the pictures showed financial adviser John Bryan licking Ferguson's toes. After Prince Andrew's divorce in 1996, Prince Philip and Fergie are said to have stopped speaking to each other.

Now the ex-wife of the disgraced Prince Andrew spoke to Alan Carr about her ex-father-in-law on the podcast Life's A Beach. Philip was "very wise," she says. "You had to be on your best behavior. If you made a silly comment, you were definitely told it was a silly comment," says Fergie. It was "terrifying" at times, she explains. People around him often lost their self-confidence and became insecure, says the 63-year-old. And she remembers a tip he would have had for her. "Remember, Sarah, you must be eligible but never be elected," he told her.

She got along better with Queen Elizabeth II, to whom she was very close. "If you ask me what I would do with the Queen now, I would go for a walk, look at primroses and snowdrops and tell her all about the magnolia tree," she reveals in the podcast.

Recently, Fergie has spoken more and more about the royal family. Just a few weeks ago, she revealed to "Hello Magazine" that she was also helping her ex-husband financially. "Since he retired [from his royal duties] he hasn't really been taking any tax money anymore. And I'm in a position where I can support him and the rest of the family through my work. And I'm really happy and proud to do that," she said candidly.

She remained diplomatic about the Sussexes. "I do not believe that a single person has the right to judge another person. I am not in a position to judge myself," said the mother of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who still loves the Sussexes very much close. "I've been judged my whole life and I have no judgment about the Sussexes," Fergie told People magazine.
