Banksy: Street artist unveils new work

A new work of art by legendary street artist Banksy has surfaced in the English port city of Margate. It shows a woman dressed in 1950s style. She has a black eye and is missing a tooth. A male person has apparently just disposed of it in a real freezer that is in front of the wall of the house on which the motif can be seen. Banksy confirmed the authenticity of the work on Tuesday (February 14) on his official Instagram channel. The artwork is titled "Valentine's Day Mascara," according to the artist's website.

Under the artist's Instagram post, users share thoughts on the meaning of the work. "Fight against violence against women. Even on Valentine's Day. Always!" Is the most liked comment. The town of Margate has meanwhile removed the freezer, which is part of the street art work, "for safety reasons", according to the town council's official website.

However, as of February 15, the chest freezer would be back in place. The object has been "made safe", the city administration has announced, and is now back "in its original position at the site of the work of art".

Banksy's identity is still unknown. The only thing that is certain is that the artist is British and comes from Bristol. At the end of last year, Banksy caused a stir with a series of works he created in Ukraine.
