The science fiction work "Everything Everywhere All at Once" won at this year's Independent Spirit Awards. The film, directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, won in seven categories, including best screenplay and best director, in Los Angeles on Saturday. The German Florian Hoffmeister won in the best camera category for the music film "Tár".

The Spirit Awards recognize film productions that have not cost more than $22.5 million. Previous winning films such as "Moonlight", "Birdman" and "Nomadland" also took home the Oscar for best picture. "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is also nominated there this year, as well as in ten other categories. The Oscars will be awarded next Sunday.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" is about a laundromat owner (Michelle Yeoh) with a chaotic everyday life who takes on the tax inspector (Jamie Lee Curtis) at the IRS because of her tax return. She also has problems with her daughter and her husband (Ke Huy Quan) wants a divorce. Her universe is turned upside down, she whirls through parallel worlds in which action and kung fu elements are also used.
