Awards: 92 countries in the running for the foreign Oscar: Germany included

Film contributions from 92 countries apply for the so-called foreign Oscar for 2023. The Oscar Academy announced this yesterday in Beverly Hills, California. The war film "Nothing New in the West" by Edward Berger is competing for Germany in the "International Feature Film" category.

"Tembele" is the first entry from Uganda among the foreign candidates for the 95th Academy Awards in March.

Switzerland is represented with "Drii Winter" by director Michael Koch, Austria with the historical film "Corsage" by Marie Kreutzer, France with "Saint Omer" by filmmaker Alice Diop, Mexico with "Bardo, the invented chronicle of a handful of truths" by Oscar -Prize winner Alejandro González Iñárritu.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences initially selects 15 films from all international applications. This "shortlist" is to be announced on December 21st. At the end of January, five films will then be nominated for the final round. The Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 12, 2023.

The German entry for the foreign Oscar 2022, Maria Schrader's "I am your human being", made it onto the shortlist but did not make it into the final round. Germany's last success in this Oscar category was 15 years ago: in 2007, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Stasi drama "The Lives of Others" won the trophy.
