ARD news broadcast: Outfit premiere: "Tagesschau" spokesman appears for the first time without a tie

The "Tagesschau" has been an institution on German television for many years and is considered the flagship among the news programs - always extremely serious, but sometimes also quite traditional. Some also say: dusty. This also applies to the outfits. The speakers don't have much leeway there. For men, for example, the iron rule has applied since the first "Tagesschau" edition in 1952: a tie is mandatory.

André Schünke has now broken with that. The news anchor went on the air without a tie, he just wore a light blue shirt with his jacket. Too many viewers may not have noticed: Schünke moderated at 1.40 a.m. at night. Nevertheless, he could have initiated a paradigm shift in the time-honored "Tagesschau".

"No breakdown," stressed Schünke on his Instagram profile. News anchors are now allowed to appear without a tie, the journalist explained - and he was the first to make use of the rule change. However, this only applies to the speakers who present the "Tagesschau" at night. During the day, chief spokesman Jens Riewa and Co. can only be seen with a tie.

Incidentally, Riewa was also the only "Tagesschau" spokesman to date who completed a program "topless". However, for a special occasion: he appeared in 2020 together with Jan Hofer in his last show to say goodbye to the longtime news anchor – and only wore a jacket and shirt. Hofer read the news himself, and then symbolically took off his tie at the end of the show, as the last official act after almost 36 years at Germany's best-known news show.
