The German contribution "Nothing New in the West" by director Edward Berger has been nominated for an Oscar in the top category "Best Film". This was announced by the Los Angeles Film Academy on Tuesday. Along with the anti-war drama are nine other films in the most important category, including "Avatar: The Way of Water", "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and "The Fabelmans".

"Nothing New in the West" based on the book by Erich Maria Remarque from 1929 shows the horror of the First World War from the perspective of a young soldier. Austrian Felix Kammerer plays the leading role. "I'm a bit overwhelmed," said director Edward Berger of the German Press Agency on the phone when asked about the numerous nominations. Berger is currently filming a new project in Italy.

The work has chances of a golden boy in eight other categories. These include "Best Foreign Language Film", "Best Adapted Screenplay" and "Best Film Music". The German composer and pianist Volker Bertelmann, known by his stage name Hauschka, was nominated for an Oscar in 2017 together with his US colleague Dustin O'Halloran for the soundtrack to the film "Lion". At the award ceremony, however, they went away empty-handed.

Austin Butler ("Elvis"), Colin Farrell ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), Brendan Fraser ("The Whale"), Paul Mescal ("Aftersun") and Bill Nighy ("Living ") do.

Best Actress goes to Cate Blanchett ("Tár"), Ana de Armas ("Blonde"), Andrea Riseborough ("To Leslie"), Michelle Williams ("The Fabelmans") and Michelle Yeoh ("Everything Everywhere All at Once") into the race.

Supporting cast includes Brendan Gleeson ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), Brian Tyree Henry ("Causeway"), Judd Hirsch ("The Fabelmans"), Barry Keoghan ("The Banshees of Inisherin") and Ke Huy Quan ("Everything Everywhere All at Once").

Angela Bassett ("Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"), Hong Chau ("The Whale"), Kerry Condon ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Everything Everywhere All at Once") have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. and Stephanie Hsu ("Everything Everywhere All at Once").

Competing in the "Best Director" category are Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), Martin McDonagh ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"), Ruben Östlund ("Triangle of Sadness ") and Todd Field ("Tar").

The science fiction film "Everything Everywhere All at Once" received the most nominations overall. The work by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert is nominated for eleven Oscars, including in the categories "Best Film" and "Best Director". The strip tells the chaotic everyday life of a laundromat owner (Michelle Yeoh) who fights with the tax inspector (Jamie Lee Curtis) at the tax office because of her tax return. She also has problems with her daughter and her husband (Ke Huy Quan) wants a divorce. Her universe is turned upside down, she whirls through parallel worlds in which action and kung fu elements are also used.

In addition to the German contribution "Nothing New in the West", the tragic comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin" also received nine nominations, followed by the biopic "Elvis" with eight nominations. Steven Spielberg's drama The Fabelmans received seven nominations. "Top Gun: Maverick" had six nominations, while "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" had five nominations. James Cameron's "Avatar" is on the list four times.

The nominations were announced by British actor Riz Ahmed and his US colleague Allison Williams. The 95th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood is scheduled for March 12th.
