The actress Meltem Kaptan (42) has been nominated as best actress for the European Film Awards. The comedienne has been suggested for her role in Andreas Dresen's film "Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush". In it she plays the mother of longtime Guantánamo prisoner Murat Kurnaz. The European Film Academy announced the nominations on Tuesday.

Kaptan, who lives in Cologne, had already won an award at the Berlinale and a German Film Prize for the role. In the film, her character fights for the release of her son from the US prison camp in Guantanamo, Cuba.

When the European Film Awards are presented, four more women will be in the running for the award. The Spanish Hollywood star Penélope Cruz ("Parallel Mothers"), the French actress Léa Seydoux ("On a Beautiful Morning"), the Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps ("Corsage") and the Iranian actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi ("Holy Spider") are nominated. .

"Triangle of Sadness" with four nominations

Five titles have been proposed as the best European film. This includes the satire "Triangle of Sadness", which won the Palme d'Or in Cannes. The Danish filmmaker Ruben Östlund tells the story of a luxury cruise that ends differently than planned. The film currently has four nominations.

Lukas Dhont's youth drama "Close" and Ali Abbasi's thriller "Holy Spider", set in Iran, have also been nominated four times. Both titles have been nominated for best film, among other things, as has the historical drama "Corsage". The Austrian Marie Kreutzer deals with Empress Sisi. "Alcarràs - The Last Harvest" is also in the running. In it, director Carla Simón tells the story of peach farmers in Spain.

"Nothing new in the West" with no chances

Zlatko Buric ("Triangle of Sadness"), Pierfrancesco Favino ("Nostalgia"), Elliott Crosset Hove ("Godland"), Eden Dambrine ("Close") and Paul Mescal ("Aftersun") are nominated for Best Actor.

For the anti-war epic "Nothing New in the West" - the German hope for the race for the foreign Oscar - there was no nomination in the main categories. Other nominations for cinematography, editing, costume design and visual effects are expected to be announced in two weeks (November 23).

The European Film Awards will then be presented on December 10th in Reykjavik, Iceland. The approximately 4,400 members of the European Film Academy vote on many award winners, similar to the Oscars in the USA. Last year the drama "Quo Vadis, Aida?" about the massacre in Srebrenica was awarded the best European film of the year.

Three awards for this year have already been announced. The German director Margarethe von Trotta ("Hannah Arendt") is to be honored for her life's work, the Italian Marco Bellocchio ("Il Traditore") for innovative storytelling and the Palestinian director Elia Suleiman ("From the Pouring of the Lemon Tree") for his commitment to the world cinema.
