95th Academy Awards: "No New West" wins Oscar for Best Cinematography

The literary adaptation "Nothing New in the West" won an Oscar for best cinematography. Cameraman James Friend was honored in Los Angeles on Monday night. "Thank you so much," said the Brit on stage. Director Edward Berger's anti-war film has been nominated a total of nine times and is the first German work to be nominated in the "Best Film" category.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque and tells of the horrors of the First World War. In the category "Best Makeup" the film got nothing - in this category the team of "The Whale" was awarded.

Allusion to Will Smith scandal

The ceremony was moderated by Jimmy Kimmel. At the beginning he made an allusion to the scandal of last year. "Well we have strict guidelines," Kimmel announced. If someone gets violent this time - they'll get the Oscar for best actor. Last year, Hollywood star Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock for a gag about his wife and was nevertheless awarded one of the most important prizes, the leading role award for his performance in the drama "King Richard".

Actor Ke Huy Quan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The 51-year-old received the award for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. The award for best supporting actress also went to an actress of the science fiction action film - to Jamie Lee Curtis, who tearfully rejoiced: "I just won an Oscar!". The film entered the race with eleven nominations as a favourite.

The tragic comedy The Banshees of Inisherin also has nine nominations. Films like "The Fabelmans", "Top Gun: Maverick", "Elvis" or "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" are nominated more often. In the acting categories, Cate Blanchett ("Tár"), Michelle Yeoh ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"), "Elvis" actor Austin Butler and Brendan Fraser ("The Whale") are in the running. "Navalny" won the award for best documentary.

Actor Dwayne Johnson, singer Lenny Kravitz and actresses Halle Berry, Eva Longoria, Nicole Kidman, Sigourney Weaver and Andie MacDowell appeared on the carpet - which this time is champagne-colored instead of red.
