Madrid Central has become one of the feuding policies of the capital. Although at the moment the area of low emissions (ZBE) is still active, the team of Government formed by the PP and Cs has shown its intention to modify it. They presented their plan, Madrid 360 that still is not working, as “more ambitious” than the current, but all the steps you have taken has been to relax the regulations in force, which since its implementation has reduced pollution by around 20%, according to the monthly balance with municipal data that performs Ecologists in Action.
The last and most drastic change in Madrid, Central promoted by the city Hall came last week: on Thursday, the mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida announced that cut the ZBE. Two streets in the area of Moncloa (Martyrs of Alcalá and the Seminary of Nobles, in the neighborhood of Moncloa) will reopen back to the traffic. In addition, in January 2020, the constraints had become more demanding, but in its last executive session the city Council also extended the moratoria to vehicle pollutants of various types.

Almeida maintains a complex relationship with the ZBE. Before the elections, called for its dismantling (in fact attempted to paralyze, but several judges stopped him); after he spoke of his improvement and extension. During the Climate Summit Madrid defended Madrid Central and good results; when the delegations environmental from around the world left the capital, the mayor returned to propose descafeinarla. That was what he did last week: Almeida had already announced extensions of some delays to vehicles more polluting than met this month; last Thursday, the became a reality.
Well, the vehicles of professionals, from more than 3,500 kilos will be able to access the ZBE until December 2024; those of fewer than 3,500, up to December 2021 provided that they have a label. The city Council also had the intention of circulating it also to vehicles without a tag, but the rule prevents them from doing so. Yes that may happen, during a year, the vehicle without a label of parents and mothers of students whose schools are in the area. The bikes of sharing extend its hours of access to Madrid Central (from 22.00 to midnight; with the exception of those who do not have a label). The particular and the rest of the bikers to maintain the current limit.
Sources of the City they defend these changes as “improvements” of the ZBE. The opposition, Madrid and PSOE considers that “crack Madrid Central and endanger the health of the people of madrid”. Greenpeace is concerned about the drift of the mayor: “The confusing message that you are moving out of that ‘improves’ the ZBE at the same time that it relaxes is very dangerous,” explains Adrián Fernández, responsible of mobility of the environmental organization, “this chaos in the informative just increasing the traffic”. This is what occurred in October when, after months of reduction, the traffic returned to growth.Updated Date: 30 December 2019, 02:00
