Winter tourism: There are no guests in Austria: the balance is below the pre-crisis level

The booking situation in Austrian tourism at the end of the winter fell short of the pre-crisis level despite strong growth. As the state Statistics Austria announced today in a preliminary balance sheet, the number of overnight stays between November and February was 9.6 percent below the value for the same period in the 2019/20 season.

"These are the effects of some crises," said Martin Stanits from the Austrian Hotel Association. Not only guests from the warring countries Russia and Ukraine would be missing, but also tourists from Asian markets, he told the German press agency dpa. Also, given the increased prices, some guests are booking shorter stays than they used to.

Compared to the time before the corona pandemic, the Alpine country recorded declines from Germany and almost all other important countries of origin. Bookings from Russia and China plummeted more than 80 percent.

Compared to the previous season 2021/22, however, the number of overnight stays this winter recovered by 45.9 percent. "The nice thing is that we got through the low," said Stanits.
