Technical system: digital traffic management to relieve the burner route

To solve the long-term traffic dispute on the Brenner route, Bavaria, Austria and Tyrol are relying on the introduction of transnational digital traffic management. "I am pleased about the cooperation on a joint, cross-state slot system for the entire Brenner corridor," said Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) today after a meeting with the Tyrolean Provincial Councilor René Zumtobel and the South Tyrolean Mobility Councilor Daniel Alfreider in Bolzano.

"The most important thing for joint traffic management is the exchange of traffic data in order to create more predictability - the three countries and regions want to work on this together," emphasized Alfreider. "We want to achieve safety for road users, better quality of life for residents and, of course, relief for the environment. That's only possible if the states see the corridor as something they have in common."

Technology should support

In order to relieve the Brenner line, freight traffic should be jointly managed digitally in the future. Alfreider said, however, that which system works best for joint digital traffic management still needs to be explored. A technical working group between the three countries has collected initial proposals. In a next step, the countries want to draw up a joint declaration.

"Cross-border traffic management would mean the end of traffic jams in block handling for Bavaria," said Bernreiter. "That would be a great relief for the local population and of course also for the truck drivers. We still have work to do, but the cooperation is very constructive."

"With digital traffic management for transit trucks, the Brenner corridor could become a model region from which the burdened population as well as the transport industry will benefit in equal measure," emphasized Zumtobel. Tyrol, Bavaria and South Tyrol face the same challenges.
