Stock exchange in Frankfurt: Dax gives way

Negative guidance from Wall Street triggered moderate profit-taking on the German stock market on Thursday. In early trading, the German leading index Dax lost 0.51 percent to 15,103.90 points. The MDax for medium-sized companies fell by 0.81 percent to 28,587.02 points. The EuroStoxx 50, the leading index in the euro zone, lost 0.48 percent to 4154.35 points.

The momentum had already slacked off the day before. Initially, disappointments about quarterly reports weighed on the mood, in the afternoon it was particularly weak data on industrial production in the USA. After the stock markets in Europe closed, the economic report from the US Federal Reserve also made it clear that the world's largest economy had barely grown recently, putting further pressure on the previously weak US stock exchanges.

Among the 40 stocks in the leading German index, Henkel and Infineon were particularly in focus. The consumer goods and adhesives maker's assets fell 1.1 percent and was weighed down primarily by US competitor HB Fuller, according to retailers. Due to high raw material costs and a strong US dollar, the fourth quarter and the outlook were disappointing.

The shares of chip manufacturer Infineon, meanwhile, went against the market trend by 0.2 percent. The US analysis company Bernstein Research rated the paper as "outperform" and a target price of EUR 40. After massive losses in 2022, analyst Sara Russo expects a better year for the European semiconductor industry. In view of increasing investments and strong, long-term growth trends, there are more advantages than the market allows the industry. Infineon is their favorite due to its focus on power management chips.

According to traders, a "mixed quarterly report" including the statements on the new financial year burdened the shares of the Linux specialist Suse in the SDax. They lost 5.1 percent. However, it went down even more clearly for the papers from Auto1, which dropped by 12.0 percent. Goldman analyst Lisa Yang dropped her buy recommendation and is now skeptical about shares in online car dealers, among other things.

She is now also more skeptical about RTL and now recommends selling shares in the TV station. They then fell by 2.7 percent in the MDax. ProSiebenSat.1, which Goldman analyst Yang left on "Sell", fell 1.1 percent.
