Hogwarts Express: Royal Mint mints the first collector's coins for Harry Potter fans

The Royal Mint may be a time-honoured mint - after all, the British institution, which is now headquartered in Wales, has been around for 1136 years. Collectors can purchase coins, gold and silver bars and financial products related to precious metals as an investment. But the mint also brings out playful products for the small purse again and again. These include, for example, a "Winnie the Pooh" collection of 50 pence coins or coins with "The Snowman and the Snowdog" or those with a Pride motif. There was also a James Bond series.

The Royal Mint has now introduced a series that could inspire Harry Potter fans to take up the hobby of coin collecting: they are issuing a series of collector's coins with motifs from Joanne K. Rowling's books. The first of the four motifs was presented to the public this Monday. Among other things, it is minted on a 50 pence coin. On one side you can see the steam locomotive of the Hogwarts Express, on the other side the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September. The occasion for the new coin series is the 25th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter volume, the Royal said Mint with.

The Harry Potter coins are not only special because of the theme, it said. But also because the portrait of the monarch is changed within the coin series. Because the first two Harry Potter motifs will be embossed with the portrait of Elizabeth II, the other two with that of her son and successor, King Charles III. Also because of this - very rare - change within a series, the Royal Mint expects a high demand for the Harry Potter coins.

The series will run until 2023. A picture of the sorcerer's apprentice is planned as further motifs, followed by Hogwarts magic school and a picture of its head, Professor Dumbledore.

The coins with the respective motif are available in different versions - from a simple uncirculated coin to variants in silver and gold. The cheapest is the 50p Hogwarts coin for £11. The most expensive gold coin from the series costs 5215 pounds or around 6064 euros.

The Royal Mint is legendary, having resided in London for more than 1000 years before relocating to Llantrisant in Wales in 1980. But other countries also have similar mints - in this country it is the German Mint. The Germans also mint not only gold or silver coins for investments, but also colorful and playful collectibles, currently for example a series of 5-euro coins on the subject of insects, each coin costs 15.95 euros.

At the Austrian Mint, the legendary 3-euro taler has now achieved cult status. As a follow-up to the famous "Super Dinosaur" series with dinosaur pictures that glow in the dark, a series with glowing sea creatures was recently started, each of the coins costs 14.40 euros. You need a UV lamp to see the color effects of the sea motifs.
