Due to the energy price crisis, easier access to short-time work will be extended until the end of June 2023. After the resolution of a corresponding ordinance by Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) in the Federal Cabinet, short-time work also remains open to temporary workers.

The number of employees who have to be affected by loss of work before short-time work can take effect remains reduced - from at least one third to at least 10 percent. In addition, the build-up of negative working time balances before short-time work benefits are granted will continue to be refrained from. From January 1st, the regulations will follow on from the simplifications that are already taking effect.

According to a statement on Wednesday in Berlin, Heil pointed out that the situation on the labor market remained stable. But the government continues to stand by the side of companies and employees. By extending the rules, the government is creating secure prospects beyond the winter. "Short-time work remains a stable bridge over a deep economic valley," said Heil. The number of employees affected by short-time work had recently fallen sharply from up to around 6 million at the peak of the corona pandemic.
