Energy: Gas price brake cannot compensate for higher taxes

According to calculations by the comparison portal Check24, the increase in the VAT rate on gas results in an additional burden for a model household despite the extension of the gas price cap. Accordingly, such a household with an annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours of natural gas would save 64 euros per year through the extension of the gas price brake planned by the federal government until the end of April 2024. However, due to the planned increase in VAT from 7 to 19 percent at the turn of the year, the additional burden per year would be 264 euros. The bottom line is that this amounts to 200 euros, reported Check24.

Households with a basic supply tariff that is often above the price cap would benefit slightly more from the extension of the price cap and would have an annual average additional cost of 176 euros.

There was no reduction in the VAT rate for electricity due to the energy crisis. According to Check24, an extension of the price brake would lead to a relief of 18 euros over the entire year for a model household (5000 kilowatt hours of annual consumption). Households with basic electricity supplies would be relieved of an average of 46 euros per year.

Customers in basic service tariffs in particular continue to benefit from the extension of the price caps, explained Check24 manager Steffen Suttner.
