Verdict chrono

so far the only city versatile to be available in version "full hybrid" (as opposed to the "mild hybrid" that do not offer a sequence of driving zero-emission), the Toyota Yaris must now deal with two rival serious, the Honda Jazz e:HEV and Renault Clio E-Tech. The strengths of the Yaris resident in its sobriety (87 g/km, a record for a car not rechargeable), but also and especially on its progression to be very clear on the plan performance and driving pleasure, the two major weak points of the previous model. In the end, the Toyota presents a very good compromise. If the Jazz is more habitable and convenient (thanks to the rear seats, magic) and more sober in the city, in particular thanks to its lightness, it is less convincing on the road. A context in which the Clio pulls in the other hand its pin from the game because of a higher power (140 hp) and, especially, of an original transmission that allows the engine heat to lead directly to the wheels according to 4 separate reports, for the benefit of efficiency but also and especially the pleasure of the ride.

The Yaris 4 does nothing of the previous since it release simultaneously with a new platform and a chain of hybrid traction new, latest generation. The length does not change hardly within 3.94 m, on the other hand the body is lowered and extended 4 inches, while the wheelbase is stretched by 5 cm to 2.56 m. The platform TNGA-B is announced 37 % more rigid in torsion than the previous and premiere of new routes to the ground. If the principle of McPherson is kept at the front, the strut is more inclined towards the inside at the same time to reduce the level of friction in the shock absorber for the benefit of the comfort, and to take on more negative camber in compression in order to delay the onset of understeer in a curve. The rear axle, still with torsion beam has been stiffened by 80 % by roll, in order in particular to allow the use of coil springs a little less steep, again for the benefit of the comfort.

But the main change lies under the hood with the appearance of a 3-cylinder 1.5-litre derived from the 4-cylinder 2-litre Corolla. This new block is simply an indirect injection to reduce its cost, but does not free himself of a particulate filter provided. It has a compression ratio of 14:1 and two connections variable camshafts, one operating intake side is electric to modulate more quickly and precisely on the Atkinson cycle, the principle of which is based on a late closing of the intake valves is to get a effective stroke of relaxation longer than that of compression, for the benefit of the efficiency of the thermodynamic which can reach 40 %. This power of 91 hp, it drives the front wheels through a train épicycloïdal that it leads to the porte-satellites ; the transmission ratio is determined by the resistant torque of the generator MG1 attached to the pinion sun gear. The differential and the electric traction motor MG2, 79 ch are, themselves, linked to the crown with internal teeth of the train épicycloïdal. This principle of continuously variable transmission (e-CVT said bypass power released by the first Prius in 1997, it was therefore extended, but it is here associated to a electronic-power to improved performance, and a lithium-ion battery pack lighter (25 kg versus 37) and more powerful than the unit nickel metal-hydride of the previous model.

Toyota announced a cumulative power of 116 hp, which allows to deduce that the new battery pack is about 20 kW (27 hp), or even a little more value peak (about 30 kW or 41 hp). Compared to the previous model, the power has therefore increased to 16 hp, while the global mass is reduced from 20 kg. Earnings performance substantially improved with a 0 to 100 km/h come in the 10.3 s, which is a gain of 1.5 s. Best, it is mostly the consumption and therefore CO2 emissions are reduced by approximately 25 %, from 84 to 63 g/km on NEDC cycle-correlated. On cycle WLTP more realistic, this new Yaris hybrid boasts the excellent value of 87 g/km. What not only escape any penalty, but also to the TVS annually for the first three years.

moving to the edge of the new Yaris, we measure first the benefits of the new platform allowing a driving position less upright, more comfortable, close to the references of the segment in this area such as the VW Polo and Renault Clio, thanks in particular to a steering column now more horizontal and extends over a greater range of adjustment. The quality of manufacturing has also made great progress compared to the previous model that was it is true very perfectible in this area. If the roominess in the rear is now completely correct, the boot volume remains measured to be the category with only 286 liters.

The safety equipment is very comprehensive with, in series, as on the new Honda Jazz, an airbag central to avoid that the occupants of the front seats do not hurt each other by hitting on the occasion of a side impact. The pack Toyota Safety Sense built-in to the endowment of series includes, in addition, thanks to the fusion of sensors (radar + camera) for the detection of pedestrian and cyclist that can trigger a braking autonomous emergency, adaptive cruise control, the reading of the panels, the retention in the circulation process, the automatic switching of road lights to low beam to avoid dazzling other motorists. This new Yaris is also the only model in the B-segment to offer the option of a system of head-up display (projection on windshield) of the main driving information.

But it is by action that the new Yaris hybrid shows the most convincing : because of its much more powerful battery, it is showing both more nervous at the start, and be able to stay in 100 % electric longer and up to speeds significantly higher (70 km/h). In a result, it is more than 80 % of the time in mode for zero emissions in town. Better, even on the highway, the electric propulsion is sufficient to maintain transiently 130 km/h. the rest of The time, when the gasoline engine is requested, its mounted in regime, are now much better controlled, less erratic. In this regard, we must acknowledge the replacement of the 4-cylinder engine in the previous model by a 3-cylinder as a wise choice : to ear, to plan the same, the new block seems to turn slower, due to the much lower frequency of its combustion.

On the dynamic plan also, this Yaris 4th generation is increasing significantly. She is more agile, more effective, and therefore much more enjoyable to drive on long, winding road. The comfort also marks a substantial progress, in particular by filtering, without, however, reaching the level of the references of the segment due to a depreciation leaving fluttering on coatings with dents. Similarly, the electric power steering's lack of balance, which disrupts the holding of cape town on a highway or a road. For what we have seen during the grip of a prototype for the development of the Clio, E-Tech, the Renault, a little more powerful, should keep the advantage in terms of comfort and driving enjoyment, especially on the road.

Still, the simplicity of this new Yaris is very impressive. Significantly less than 4 l/100 km in the city, its consumption has finally reached 4,2 l/100 km according to the onboard computer on a course completed at a good pace combining city, highway and secondary road.
