The edition 2021 of the motor Show of Geneva, a major event in the sector, has been cancelled due to the financial implications of the pandemic coronavirus, announced its organizers.

In a statement, the committee and the foundation board of the geneva international motor Show indicate that they have " renounced to organize a demonstration in 2021, for obvious reasons : as a result of a survey, the majority of the exhibitors indicated that it would not participate probably not an edition 2021 and that it favoured a next edition in 2022 ".

In addition, explain the organizers, " it is not certain that the health situation allows the organization of an event gathering more than 600 000 visitors and 10 000 journalists in the spring of next year ".

Losses and no profit

The auto Show in Geneva is usually held in march. It was cancelled this year at the last minute due to the pandemic of Covid-19.

organizers had immediately asked the canton of Geneva for financial support to cover the losses caused by the first cancellation, estimated at 11 million swiss francs (10 million euros), and to prepare a new edition.

at the Beginning of June, the geneva authorities had approved a loan of $ 16.8 million swiss francs. The exhibition organisers have, however, decided Monday to reject the loan because they would not have been able to cope with the first maturity date in June 2021. In addition, this loan was also subject to the condition that the show be held in 2021, which will not take place.

The press release also indicates that the organizers are considering to sell the salon at the Palace of exhibitions and congresses of Geneva (Palexpo).
