When it is the largest consumer of wood in the world, difficult to ensure that all stems from a virtuous circuit. Already pointed out a few years ago, Ikea, the Swedish giant of the furniture, must today face new charges, which came this time from the NGO Earthsight, as explained by BFM TV. While the firm communicates frequently on his collaboration with the environmental label Forest Stewardship Council and the world wide Fund for nature (WWF), a part of the wood she uses is actually illegally felled.

The investigators of the NGO Earthsight explain that it's wood from the province of Velkyy Bychkiv, in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Here, according to BFM TV, the forests are controlled by state-owned companies where the corrutpion is the rule. The month of April to mid-June, the law imposes, in Ukraine, a so-called period of "silence" intended to allow the local fauna to breed in peace by stopping all logging. But during this period, and despite the containment, the NGO reveals that the illegal logging would have been massive.
Ikea reacts quickly
The beech wood collected would then be used by the Swedish firm for the manufacture of chairs, including the famous model "Terje" and chairs for dining rooms. "Each year, tens of thousands of chairs in illegal timber are sold in the Ikea stores around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany," denounces the NGO, cited by the chain of continuous information.

For its part, Ikea has not been slow to respond to the agency Reuters. "We recognize that illegal logging remains a global problem to be widespread and are working proactively to implement measures to verify that our suppliers respect the rule of law". In the aftermath, the chain of furniture store, announces that it has launched an independent audit of the practices in Ukraine.
