Wimbledon shock, season off: was that it, Roger Federer?

Tennis icon Roger Federer has not played a single professional match for almost a year. The old master works diligently and tirelessly on what may be his last big comeback, the goal for a long time is: Wimbledon. But now Federer is suffering a serious setback.

Rogert Federer has had to stay away from the ATP tour for almost ten months due to injury. Although the 20-time Grand Slam winner has been in the rehabilitation program for months and keeps coming back to social media with encouraging pictures and messages, it has now become known: Roger Federer will have to do without the entire grass season in 2022. This was reported by "Sport Bild", citing a conversation between Federer and Ralf Weber, the tournament director of the Halle lawn tournament.

In recent years, the Swiss tennis legend has traditionally used the Terra Wortmann Open (formerly the Gerry Weber Open) to prepare for the most traditional grass tournament in the world, the Wimbledon Championships. Federer also played his last professional match to date on the Holy Lawn of Wimbledon in July last year, when he lost to Hubert Hurkacz from Poland in the quarterfinals.

Since then, millions of sports fans all over the world have been cheering for what is possibly the most popular tennis player of all time and are hoping for one last big hello by Federer on the tennis stage. Due to his mandatory break of months, Roger Federer is now only 46th in the ATP world rankings and will continue to lose ground in the coming weeks.

The maestro has won a total of 20 Grand Slam tournaments since 2003, eight of them the grass spectacle at Wimbledon alone. His long-time friend and former second in the world rankings, Tommy Haas, was recently still confident that, despite the recent setback, there will be something again with a Federer comeback: "Roger seriously believes in his comeback and is fighting hard for it. He wants to know it again." He didn't have much time after the renewed setback. Roger Federer will be 41 years old on August 8th.
