2010 - 23-year-old Sebastian Vettel becomes the new Formula 1 World Champion. After Michael Schumacher, the man from Heppenheim is the second German title holder and the youngest champion in the premier class of motorsport.

2007 - The controversial Waldschlösschen Bridge in the UNESCO World Heritage Dresden Elbe Valley can be built. The Saxon Higher Administrative Court rejects applications for a temporary construction freeze. In June 2009 the UNESCO World Heritage title was revoked.

1962 - Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia revokes the autonomy of Eritrea and incorporates it into his empire as a province. Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia by the UN in 1952. The country was only able to gain independence in 1993 after a 30-year civil war.
