Weather: Summer in autumn - October ends with mild sunny days

The last weekend in October brought really summery temperatures to Germany. The German weather service (DWD) in Offenbach knows the background of this unusual weather phenomenon.

How warm will it be in the coming days anyway?

The DWD expects temperatures of up to 27 degrees. The highest values are expected in Baden-Württemberg, on the edge of the Alps and on the northern edge of the low mountain range. Only in the river valleys did areas of fog and high fog persist until noon. The temperatures there are below 20 degrees.

27 degrees - are these "real" summer days in autumn?

Yes, at least for meteorologists. Because the scientists speak of a summer day as soon as the temperatures exceed the 25 degree mark.

How does the current weather phenomenon come about?

The causes are the high-pressure area "Zacharias" over Eastern Europe and the low-pressure area "Iris" over the North Atlantic. They are currently ensuring that an air mass that is unusually warm for the time of year is moving to Germany via Spain and France.

How often does a situation like this occur?

"It happens again and again," says DWD meteorologist Marcel Schmid. However, this time Germany is exactly in the middle of this influx of warm air and thus gets the most.

Will the temperature record for October be broken?

"In all likelihood, this value will then be missed," says Schmid. Because: The highest temperature ever measured in Germany in the last third of October is 28.6 degrees. She was reached on October 26, 2006 in Emmendingen-Mundingen (Baden-Württemberg). In 2009, 30.9 degrees were even measured in Müllheim in Baden - but that was on October 7th and thus at the beginning of the month.

There were already some sunny days in October this year. Where has it been warmest so far?

In Bernburg an der Saale on October 17 with 26.8 degrees Celsius (as of October 27). The DWD will publish the detailed monthly balance sheet on Monday.

What's next for next week?

Until Sunday, the meteorologists expect "ideal weather nationwide for an afternoon in the beer garden or a barbecue with friends". From Monday that will change. Then the peaks go down a bit. "With temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees, however, it is still far too mild for the time of year," says Schmid.

Does mild October have an economic impact?

Germany's households and smaller companies consumed significantly less natural gas last week than in previous years. According to the Federal Network Agency in Bonn, the average gas consumption per day in calendar week 42 was 549 gigawatt hours (GWh). That is a good 41 percent less than the daily average in the same calendar weeks from 2018 to 2021 (935 GWh).
