Weather forecast: Black ice start into the new week

The night of Sunday brought freezer temperatures in many places in Germany. It was coldest in Bavaria, according to the German Weather Service. In the Bavarian Forest, the thermometer dropped to minus 19 degrees, in Franconian Bamberg minus 17.7 degrees were measured.

After the wintry fourth weekend of Advent, the new week begins with a dangerous weather situation: On Monday night and Monday morning, mild air with rain will come into the country from the west. The rain falls on the frozen ground, dangerous black ice threatens.

According to the DWD, the rain reached the extreme west of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate shortly before midnight and spread eastwards in the following hours. "The center and the north are reached in the morning - of all things when the rush-hour traffic rolls on," said Sonja Stöckle from the DWD weather forecast center.

For the rest of the week, the supply of mild air will remain. "By Christmas Eve, the last snow has melted away almost everywhere," said Stöckle. "So the first thing to say is: Goodbye winter, no snow at Christmas." It rains again and again, the daily highs remain in the high single-digit or even double-digit range. Only in the high altitudes of the Alps does it remain white in winter.
