Volleyball: BR Volleys secure first place with a 3-1 win against Düren

The Berlin Volleys are back on the road to success in the volleyball Bundesliga. After a weak start, the German champions won the top game against the SWD powervolleys Düren on Wednesday with 3:1 (31:33, 27:25, 25:17, 25:20). Last Saturday, the club from the capital surprisingly lost to the Grizzlies Giesen with a B team (0:3). BR Volleys and Düren also meet in the German Cup final in Mannheim on February 26th.

In front of 3691 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle, middle blocker Anton Brehme was the outstanding player for the host. With the victory, the BR Volleys have already qualified for the intermediate round as the top of the table, regardless of the outcome of their last main round game on Friday at the bottom of the table VC Olympia Berlin.

Against Düren, the first two sets offered high tension. In the meantime, the hosts were already four points behind (12:16), but fought their way through good attacking actions by Ruben Schott and Timothee Carle. In the end, however, the volleys couldn't use six set points, while Michael Andrei decided the round for Düren with the third set point.

With a 23:19 lead, the Rhinelanders were well on their way to prevailing in the second half as well. But a series of serves by Brehme turned the tide. After 5:0 points in a row, the volleys had a set ball, and Schott scored the third.

From then on, the BR Volleys were wide awake. With improved block defense and a powerful serve, they took control of the game. Diagonal attacker Marek Sotola also improved considerably as the game progressed. A serve error by Düren ended the game.
