The shootings took place at the school, which was ranked as one the most safe in the state last year.
The officers were identified as a "dynamic pair" on the campus of the small college of liberal arts. They were shot and killed during what Virginia State Police described as a "brief encounter" with the suspect.
"This is a sad day for Bridgewater College," David Bushman (the school's president) said in a statement to campus residents.
Bridgewater campus officers responded to a call from a male suspect around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to authorities. After shooting both officers, the suspect fled campus on foot and was captured by police at 2 p.m.
Alexander Wyatt Campbell (27), was identified by police. Authorities said that he was charged with two felonies of capital murder, one of first-degree murder and one of using a firearm in committing a crime.
Police claimed they found multiple guns associated with Campbell both on- and off campus.
Although authorities declined to comment on the suspect’s relationship to Bridgewater College, they said that he was initially considered suspicious as he "wasn't belong" on campus. According to police, his last known address was located in Ashland Virginia, which is about two hours drive from the school.
Campbell is currently being held at Rockingham County Jail without bond. Campbell sustained a non-life-threatening shotgun wound. Police are not sure if he was shot by an officer or if he inflicted it himself.
Bushman stated that these officers were close friends and are known as the "dynamic duo". John was J.J.’s best man at his wedding in this year. Students, faculty, and staff loved them. As I know they all feel the same, I am sorry for their loved ones and families.
Bushman stated that the officers are also close to the college's students at the press conference.
He said, "This moment should focus on care and compassion." People we love have lost those they love. I ask that you keep John and J.J., as well as their families, in your thoughts and prayers.
Giovanni Ardalan is a 21-year old senior at Bridgewater College. He was in his strength-and-conditioning class when he heard gunshots. He claimed he heard one officer moaning outside.
Ardalan stated, "When he stopped moaning we all knew he was gone." "Both officers were killed about five feet from the building I was inside."
Hayden Hawes, a sophomore at school, said that he and his classmates had locked themselves in the office of their professor during the shooting.
He said, "I'm a man of faith and I knew I would be OK in the end."
Ted Flory, Bridgewater Mayor, stated that the community is "heartbroken" by the deaths and injuries.
He wrote, "And we are rightly angry at the evil that alighted upon our lives."
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued a statement Tuesday evening directing flags to fly at half-staff Wednesday.
