Two people died in a wrong-way driver accident on Autobahn 4 near the Saxony-Thuringia border on Wednesday. According to the police, an 82-year-old was driving in the wrong direction on the lane towards Dresden in the morning. Her car then collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle near Meerane.

Both the elderly woman and the driver of the other car died in the accident. A police spokeswoman spoke of a devastating picture at the scene of the accident. Further investigations into the exact course of events are ongoing.

The highway was closed because of the accident and traffic was diverted at the Schmölln junction, according to the police.
