The number of dead and injured in traffic accidents has risen significantly in the past year. 2,782 people died on the roads in Germany, 9 percent more than in the previous year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced today in Wiesbaden, citing preliminary figures.

Around 358,000 people were injured - that's an increase of 11 percent. In 2021, the corona pandemic caused less traffic with lockdowns, home office and home schooling. The number of deaths on the streets had dropped to an all-time low.

However, the year 2022 did not reach the level of the pre-Corona year 2019, as the Federal Office announced. The number of fatalities in accidents was 9 percent below that of this year. Compared to the years 2019 and 2022, there was still a minus of 7 percent for the injured.

Overall, the police registered around 2.4 million accidents last year, 4 percent more than in 2021, as the statisticians reported. Compared to 2019, there is a decrease of 11 percent.

The Federal Office has detailed figures for the period from January to November 2022. With 60 percent compared to the same period last year, the number of road deaths rose particularly sharply among pedelec riders, with bicycles without an auxiliary motor there was an increase of 14 percent. In addition, 11 percent more pedestrians died, 7 percent more drivers and 2 percent more motorcyclists.
