The University of Alicante renounces the Futsal Division of Honor for not being able to register the players

The new regulations of the Spanish Football Federation oblige sports clubs to professionalize, by contract, both the players and the coaching staff of the teams that compete in the highest category of futsal. For this reason, the University of Alicante has been forced to dispense with its Honor Division team.

The director of the Sports Service of the academic institution, Roberto Cejuela, explained that the personnel selection processes of public administrations do not allow this type of hiring. The sports director has detailed the unsuccessful attempts to sponsor and sponsor the team to conclude that, finally, "the new conditions imposed by the Federation make it unfeasible to maintain a professional team for a public institution with limited resources."

And it is that another of the demands of the Federation goes through the deposit of a demanding bank guarantee and to guarantee a minimum budget of 50,000 euros.

The UA team will play in the federated amateur category. In this sense, the sports director of the UA considers that "this change in the competitive dynamic towards a more modest team can even open the door to other university soccer players at more initiatory and training levels, which is really our mission as an academic institution" .

Currently in Spain there are only three sports with a professional collective agreement: men's basketball in the ACB league, men's cycling and both men's and women's football. Most of the rest of the professional athletes are, therefore, self-employed who work based on sponsors or sponsorships.

The UA women's futsal team began its journey in 1998 and in 2011 it achieved promotion to the First Division. Since then, with permanence as the only challenge, they have managed to place themselves in the elite of the sport playing the Queen's Cup until this year, qualifying as League Runners-up 2016/17.
