The PSOE has opposed this Wednesday in Congress an initiative defended by the Popular Party to recognize the “extraordinary service” of the National Intelligence Center (CNI), alleging that the only objective is to “attack” and “wear down” the Government.

The PP deputy Antonio González Terol has been the one who has defended the non-law proposal in the Congress Defense Commission, in the midst of controversy over the espionage cases with the 'Pegasus' program and only two weeks after the dismissal of its director Peace Stephen.

He himself has recognized that an initiative in defense of the "extraordinary" work of the CNI "would not make sense" a democracy "worthy of the name", but believes that Spain "has spent years moving away from some of the most basic standards of a real democracy ».

In this sense, he has accused the Government of "attacking" State institutions and destroying their "prestige". Specifically, he has criticized the dismissal of Paz Esteban as director of the CNI without taking into account the international "discredit" that this may cause on the eve of the NATO Summit in Madrid.

However, in the opinion of the PSOE, the sole objective of this initiative is to "attack" and "wear down" the Government. “If it were really a proposal dedicated to support and respect to the members of the CNI, there would be no problem. Bottle has thus underlined that the Socialist Group "values, respects and supports" the service provided by the CNI for the security of Spain and its citizens and has recognized that its members deserve thanks for their service; but she has insisted that the objective of the PP is "unfortunate and despicable."

The proposal has received the support of Ciudadanos, which has included criticism of the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, for her "disappointing" role; and also from Vox, which has accused the Government of having caused an "unprecedented crisis in the intelligence services" with its "cowardice and weakness".
