The OCU asks the City Council to end the 'bolseo' in the Casco's garbage collection and facilitate recycling

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), a few days after the Government team at the Toledo City Council announces the name of the company that is going to be in charge of cleaning and collecting garbage, has asked you to grant this tender to a company that presents a project that replaces the current 'bolseo' system with others such as those existing in other historic cities, such as the case of Córdoba, Palma, Vitoria or Oviedo.

Similarly, and in a press release, it has called on the local Administration to offer consumers tools to facilitate the work of recycling waste, in all neighborhoods, including, obviously, the Historic District, as well as the incorporation of the so-called 'fifth container' throughout the city.

According to the OCU, consumers are increasingly aware of the impact generated by their actions on the environment, showing more participation when it comes to carrying out waste separation at home and subsequent recycling in the different containers.

“Unfortunately, residents in the Historic Center of Toledo do not have a waste collection system that allows consumers to carry out efficient segregation. The lack of containers for containers, paper and cardboard or glass adds to the non-existence of brown containers of organic matter, whose presence in the city is already obligatory. Thus, the residents of the Historic Center must dispose of their waste with the 'all in one' system, they have denounced.

«Added to this problem is the 'baggage' system used for daily garbage collection, consisting of depositing garbage, practically at the door of their portals, on the sidewalk, in the middle of a street -currently in more than 500 points undetermined and without any type of signaling- starting at 8:00 p.m. and waiting until midnight -between 12:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.- for the truck to come by to pick up all this garbage».

In the opinion of the OCU, the 'bolseo' system does not avoid the high visual impact that traditional containers also generate in a historical setting. “A city declared a World Heritage Site that at night sees its main and busiest streets riddled with bags of rubbish and waste that not only dirty and detract from its corners, but also surround it with an unbearable stench, followed by a focus of infections and diseases”, they have condemned.
