Former hockey player Guy Lafleur will posthumously receive the Medal of Honor from the National Assembly of Quebec on Tuesday at the Parliament Building, a reward granted to personalities who have distinguished themselves by "their career, their work or their commitment,” it was confirmed on Thursday.

Died of lung cancer on April 22, the Blond Demon will be honored at the same time as four other people: journalist, writer and actress Janette Bertrand is among them, as is author and director Luc Dionne, the former Minister Benoît Pelletier and Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who died after being the victim of racism from the staff of Saint-Charles-Borromée Hospital.

As specified on the site of the National Assembly, the Medal of Honor is granted by its president to people deserving “the recognition of all the members of the National Assembly and of Quebec society”. The recipients are determined on the unanimous recommendation of a committee of MNAs representing all the political parties that have a seat in the Assembly.

After being laid in state at the Bell Center on May 1 and 2, Lafleur was the subject of a state funeral at Marie-Reine-du-Monde Cathedral on May 3.
