The GDP of the eurozone rebounded 0.3% in the first quarter, with an increase of 0.5% in employment

The gross domestic product (GDP) of the euro zone registered an expansion of 0.3% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the fourth quarter of last year, when growth was similar, according to the first estimate of the data published by Eurostat, which includes an expansion of 0.5% in employment, one tenth more than in the previous three months.

For the European Union (EU) as a whole, the GDP growth estimated by the Community Statistics Office between January and March stood at 0.4%, one tenth less than between October and December. On its side, employment maintained its growth rate at 0.4%.

Compared to the first quarter of 2021, the GDP of the euro zone grew by 5.1%, which represents an acceleration of four tenths compared to the year-on-year rise of the previous three months. On their side, among the Twenty-seven an expansion of 5.2% was observed, three tenths more.

In the group of economies that have adopted the euro as their common currency, an interannual rise in employment of 2.6% was registered, five tenths more than in the previous quarter. Among the Twenty-seven there was a rise of 2.5% in employment, four tenths more.

The Spanish economy had a quarterly growth of 0.3%, below the eurozone average. The year-on-year figure was higher, observing a growth of 6.4%.

Of all the countries for which data was available, only Sweden (-0.4%), Italy (-0.2%) and Denmark (-0.1%) recorded negative growth rates compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. In terms year-on-year, all countries saw positive data.
