The first cooling tower at the decommissioned Biblis nuclear power plant collapsed in a controlled manner

The nuclear power plant has been shut down since March 2011. It was one of those plants that were shut down as part of the nuclear moratorium a few days after the tsunami and the subsequent reactor disaster at Fukushima in Japan. The power plant had previously been criticized for numerous incidents.

The dismantling has been underway since 2017, and a total of 15 years are estimated for this. The last fuel rods were removed from the power plant in 2019 and placed in an interim storage facility near the plant.

According to RWE, the second tower of block A should also fall in February. Demolition of the two towers in block B is expected for 2024.
