For another year, the Institute of Coastal Ecology has launched the scientific monitoring campaign for the Posidonia oceanica meadows on the coast of the province. The Diputación de Alicante, through the Department of the Environment, subsidizes one hundred percent of this project with 90,000 euros, which seeks to find out about the state of conservation of this endemic species, exclusive to the Mediterranean Sea, as well as disseminating its knowledge and raising awareness about the need for its preservation.

Among the peculiarities of this program, which reaches its 22nd edition, its collaborative aspect stands out, since it has the participation of volunteers who are in charge of carrying out sampling and data collection tasks, always coordinated by specialized monitors.

In this sense, the deputy responsible for the area, Miguel Ángel Sánchez, has advanced that people interested in joining this initiative can register or consult more information through the website of the Institute of Coastal Ecology -www.ecologialitoral.com- or on their social networks.

“Posidonia oceanica meadows constitute one of the most important habitats in the Mediterranean marine environment, since they are home to several hundred plant and animal species, many of them of fishing interest. In addition, they provide oxygen and retain sediment, giving stability to the beaches, and fix carbon”, explained the deputy.
