He started screaming as soon as I walked into the room and avoided my eyes when I spoke to him. For the third time in three months, the parents had brought the three-year-old to the emergency room. Once he had hit his knee on a radiator, a second time he had injured his shoulder. Nothing that caught our attention unduly. But when the parents came to see us for the third time, my colleagues and I pricked up our ears.
