The ban on open fires is lifted

Quebecers can again make open fires, the ban being lifted across the province.

Due to the increased drought, the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP), in collaboration with the society for the protection of forests against fire (SOPFEU), had banned open fires near the forests to reduce the risk of fire.

"Currently, nine forest fires are active, but the fighting operations are progressing smoothly, all the fires being under control", indicated the MFFP, adding that the firefighters had to fight 232 fires on nearly 234.2 hectares since the beginning of the season.

Quebec having experienced its earliest heat wave since the end of the 19th century, the number of forest fires having taken place since the beginning of the year is above the average of the last 10 years, i.e. 128 fires out of 106 .7 hectares of forest.
