Texas, USA: She wanted her unborn baby: Woman convicted of murdering pregnant woman

A woman has been convicted of murder in Texas. The 29-year-old killed a 21-year-old pregnant woman in October 2020 in order to kidnap her unborn baby. As reported by the Associated Press news agency, among others, the Bowie County jury in northeast Texas took about an hour to deliberate.

On October 9, 2020, police officers discovered the young woman's body in a house in New Boston, a city with around 4,600 inhabitants, located around 260 kilometers northeast of Dallas. The defendant Taylor P. had previously cut her unborn daughter from the womb of the pregnant woman. The baby did not survive the brutal attack either.

The verdict of the jury, consisting of six men and six women, came after three weeks with sometimes cruel testimonies. The defendants' lawyers argued that the baby was never alive and therefore sought a charge of kidnapping, not murder.

The 29-year-old had faked a pregnancy long before the murder. "Not because she wanted a baby, but to avoid losing her boyfriend," Assistant District Attorney Kelley Crisp told the court on Monday. For nearly ten months, she had dressed up to look pregnant, faked ultrasound scans, hosted a gender reveal party and posted about her fake pregnancy on social media in search of a possible victim. Crisp called the defendant an "actress of the highest order" who lied and cheated "to the point of no return" and ended in murder.

On the day of the murder, a state police investigator testified at the trial, she had watched video of the physical exam of an infant who was born prematurely at 35 weeks. The later victim was also 35 weeks pregnant.

The sentence is to be announced from October 12. The public prosecutor is asking for the death penalty. However, the jury can also opt for a life sentence without parole.

Watch the video: Netflix follows the crimes of notorious serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer in the new true crime series "Dahmer". The series starts on September 21 with the streaming provider.
