Subsidies for the soundproofing of small performance halls

Following concerns for the future of small performance halls, the City of Montreal is setting up an envelope of $1.4 million to allow the financing of soundproofing work.

The program will be aimed at alternative cinemas with less than 400 seats, and will be accessible until 2024. Last spring, the owner of La Tulipe launched a call for help, after a new neighbor had multiplied the complaints related to noise, each time causing fines for the small theater.

A similar situation also led to the closure of Divan Orange in 2018.

The City has also announced the implementation of a “roadmap”, with a budget of $2.1 million, to “revitalize” Montreal nightlife. This will be a prelude to the creation, for 2023, of a nightlife “policy”.
