"French society remains sexist in all areas," it continues, both in public, in private life, at work and in the media.

According to the study, 80 percent of women feel they have been discriminated against because of their gender. Just as many are afraid to go home alone in the evening. Around 90 percent of women say they avoid going out alone or wearing certain items of clothing.

About 37 percent say they have experienced coerced situations during intercourse, including sex without contraception.

On the men's side, about a quarter of under-35s believe that violence is sometimes necessary to assert oneself. Only half of this age group finds the portrayal of women in porn films problematic. A quarter of young men also think that there is too much fuss about sexual violence.

"Everyday sexism ultimately leads to violent sexism," emphasizes Sylvie Pierre-Brossolette, Chair of the Gender Equality Council. "Public opinion regrets that sexism exists, but in practice it is not prevented," she explains.

The Equal Opportunities Council calls, among other things, to combat stereotypes in public and to take action against pornographic content on the Internet. In addition, the advertising of gender-specific toys should be banned.
