Storm: Hurricane "Orlene" is heading for Mexico's coast

Hurricane Orlene has picked up speed off the Pacific coast of Mexico. The center of the hurricane, the second strongest category 4, was around 170 kilometers southwest of Cabo Corrientes in the state of Jalisco on Sunday morning (local time), according to the Mexican weather service.

With wind speeds of up to 215 kilometers per hour, "Orlene" is moving north. The hurricane is expected to first pass through the Islas Marías and then hit the mainland between San Blas and Mazatlán on the Pacific coast on Tuesday.

The hurricane was expected to lose strength in the coming days. According to the forecast by the Mexican weather service, it is likely to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane. The authority warned of heavy rain and high waves in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Sinaloa and Nayarit.

The hurricane season in the Pacific runs from May 15th to November 30th and in the Atlantic from June 1st to November 30th. Last year, 19 hurricanes and tropical storms were recorded in the eastern Pacific and 21 tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.
