The death toll from tropical storm Nalgae in southern Philippines has risen to at least 45. More than 184,000 people are affected, according to the national civil protection authority.

At least 18 people are missing, 33 were injured. 40 of the fatalities came from the province of Maguindanao, almost 1000 kilometers south of the capital Manila. Days of heavy rain had triggered flooding and landslides that buried homes under mud and rubble.

According to the weather service, the tropical storm is moving in a west-northwest direction. The authorities issued storm warnings for more than 40 provinces as well as for the capital region of Manila. Dozens of domestic flights have been canceled and shipping has been halted across much of the country.
