The popular "Star Trek" series "Discovery" will end with the upcoming fifth season. The streaming service Paramount confirmed this in a press release. Season five of the sci-fi series was ordered at the beginning of last year. The new episodes are not scheduled to appear on Paramount until 2024, and thus later than previously assumed. With only ten episodes, the final season of the "Star Trek" series is also the shortest to date.

"I can hardly believe that this breathtaking journey with 'Star Trek: Discovery' is coming to an end," Discovery leading actress Sonequa Martin-Green (37) is quoted in the press release. The 37-year-old, whose character throughout the series became captain of the titular starship, adding that she was "honored to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have been part of a legacy [...]".

Discovery began in 2017 as the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005. Over the years, the Paramount streaming service has been joined by the nostalgic show "Star Trek: Picard" (2020-2023) about the former captain of the Enterprise played by Sir Patrick Stewart (82), the animated series "Star Trek: Lower Decks". (since 2020) and "Star Trek: Prodigy" (since 2021). In 2022, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a spin-off of Discovery, started.

After the end of "Picard" with the current third season, which has also already been announced, "Strange New Worlds" will soon be the only ongoing live-action series from the "Star Trek" universe.
