Germany's handball players will play their opening game at the home European Championships against Switzerland without U21 world champion Nils Lichtlein. The 21-year-old backcourt player was not considered by national coach Alfred Gislason for the first preliminary round duel in Group A on Wednesday evening in Düsseldorf.

Teams are only allowed to enter 16 players for each game at the final tournament in Germany. Since the DHB selection includes 17 players, Gislason has to delete one player before every game. The decision must be made by one hour before kick-off.
