After the SPD, the Greens also voted in favor of the agreement with a large majority at a special party conference on Sunday. Both parties want, among other things, to make the federal state climate-neutral by 2040. In addition, the starting salary for teachers is to be increased.

Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) is standing for re-election at the inaugural session of the new state parliament in Hanover on Tuesday. Weil has held this position since 2013. The SPD parliamentary group proposed Hanna Naber for election as President of the Landtag.

For his re-election, Weil needs at least 74 yes votes from a total of 146 MPs. After the election, the members of the state government are appointed. The Prime Minister also wants to make a government statement in the state parliament.

A new state parliament was elected in Lower Saxony a good four weeks ago. The SPD clearly won the polls, the Greens became the third strongest party behind the CDU. The SPD and the Greens had already announced during the election campaign that they wanted to form an alliance. Both parties had governed together from 2013 to 2017.
