Social media campaign: Police in Venice are looking for a man who jumped from the roof of a house into a canal

More than 150 canals run through Venice, they serve as waterways in the city - and for some people apparently also as swimming pools. As such, a man used a canal in the Italian tourist hotspot. He jumped into a canal from the roof of a three-story building and had himself filmed. The video, which is spreading on social networks, causes a lot of irritation.

Even Mayor Luigi Brugnaro shared the clip on his Twitter account. The politician has absolutely no understanding for the channel jump. "This 'subject' should get a certificate for stupidity and a lot of kicking," he tweeted. Authorities in Venice would try, with the help of the police, to identify the man and the person who filmed his jump.

Details about the jumper are not yet known - but the authorities suspect that it is a tourist. In fact, the action was anything but harmless. The video shows the man, dressed only in boxer shorts, standing on a ledge with passers-by watching him from the street. Someone is trying to stop him from jumping. He hits the water with a belly flop. Since the canals in Venice are not particularly deep, such reckless actions can result in serious injury - or even death. In this case everything seemed to go smoothly.

"He risked his life with this jump," emphasized Mayor Brugnaro. However, the man not only put himself in danger, but also others. "What if a boat had passed below?" asks Brugnaro, referring to the unknown person as a "criminal". The mayor has often complained about tourists making reckless appearances in his city for their social media appearances. He calls for the mayors to be given real legal remedies against vandalism. "They do these stupid things for likes on social media," he lamented after the latest incident and announced that he would face the man in court if he was caught.
