David Beckham has been criticized for a commercial commissioned by World Cup hosts Qatar. In the spot, the English football icon describes the emirate among other things as an "incredible place" and a "perfection", before adding: "I can't wait to take my children there."

The criticism was not long in coming. "It's so terrible. He's selling his soul for blood money," British activist Peter Tatchell wrote on Twitter, where Beckham was hit with a shitstorm. The 47-year-old Beckham has been an ambassador for the sporting nation of Qatar for several months, for which he is said to receive ten million pounds (approx. 11.5 million euros) a year.

Qatar has been heavily criticized for disregarding human rights. Homosexuality is forbidden there. The exploitation and death of several thousand guest workers, also on World Cup construction sites, was widely denounced.

In the gallery: The unequal payment of female soccer players compared to their male colleagues is also discussed again and again. An adjustment has already been made or announced in these countries.
